Kuala Lumpur, 11 May 2026 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is hosting the 49th Annual Meeting of the International Board on Standards of Competence (IBSC49) at Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur.
The meeting gathers international experts and representatives in hydrography and cartography, with the involvement of key global organisations such as the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG), and the International Cartographic Association (ICA). It also includes participation from universities, professional institutions, and relevant agencies from various countries.
PLG, a UTM spin-off company and organiser of the UTM Hydrography Programmes, contributes to the event through its expertise in geospatial and hydrographic services. Its involvement supports professional training, marine geospatial development, and industry collaboration aligned with international competency standards.
The hosting of IBSC49 demonstrates the commitment of UTM and Malaysia to strengthening competency standards in hydrography and cartography. These areas are important in supporting navigational safety, maritime development, marine geospatial mapping, and sustainable ocean resource management.
The event also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UTM and Shandong University of Science and Technology (SDUST), China, to strengthen cooperation in research, education, and capacity development in hydrography and geospatial fields.
